Last Updated 13 May 2010, 17:10 IST

The university would come up at Binola in Gurgaon for which Haryana government has confirmed the availability of a 200 acre site.

The total project will cost Rs 395 crore, out of which Rs 100 crore has been earmarked for land acquisition and the rest for establishing the university, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni told reporters here. The idea of having a defence university was first mooted in 1967 after the China debacle to plug the gaps in security system. But it was kept on the back burner till Kargil conflict happened in 1999.

The Kargil review committee recommended the INDU. The INDU will be set up by an Act of Parliament with President as the Visitor, who will appoint other top officials on the advice of defence ministry.
