Bagalkot district, located in the northern part of Karnataka was bound by Bijapur district towards the north, Gadag district towards the south, Raichur district towards the east, Koppal district on the south east and Belgaum district towards the west.

It was home to the great Chalukya dynasty, and the glory of that dysnasty can still be seen at Aihole and Badami, famous for caves carved in monolithic stone during the period of Immadi Pulakeshi-I. The district is also home to the historic temples of Pattadakal. The great poet Ranna, was born at Mudhol, again part of the district. Then, there is Kudalasangama, associated with the great social revolutionary of the 12th century Basavanna. The rivers Malaprabha, Ghataprabha and Krishna flow in the district.

The district headquarters of Bagalkot is 90 km away from the city of Bijapur. Ancient inscriptions record the town’s name as Bagadage. Later, the place is said to have been called Bagdikot and corrupted to Bagilakote or Bagalkot.
