Borer haunt king of fruits

Last Updated 01 June 2010, 17:03 IST

Already battered by unseasonable rain and drop in flowering of mango trees, mango growers in Srinivaspur are now worried over borer menace to the crop. Farmers did not implement  the suggestions by the Horticulture department to control the menace.

Farmers in the mango basin of Srinivaspur and other parts of the district have had to encounter slew of problems since the beginning of the mango season due to a drop in flowering. Their worries were compounded as large quantities of flowers withered due to off season rain coupled with gusty winds in February and March. While both these were bad signals about the quantity of the yield, attack by borer has come as a bolt from the blue to the farmers.

This has resulted in the sharp fall in the yield. Mango-lovers are unable to get quality fruits and the prices is also high.  Even as the demand for mangoes is on the rise, the  mangoes are transported to neighbouring states.
