'Unused school books lying in depot'

Education dept asks postal dept to distribute text books
Last Updated 02 June 2010, 16:47 IST

This is because the Education Department has stopped distribution of books through Government book depots and instead has asked Postal department to take over distribution. The text books from first to eighth standard are hogging dust in the depot.

Kerala Book and Publishing Centre Kakkanad is printing all the text books for the state. This year it has taken the responsibility of distribution too and hence it has opened up 3 centres. These three centres are distributing books from Palakkad to Kasargod.  Following the order of Education Department, postal department is now distributing the text books to schools. Postal book Marketing Executive Harish informed that Postal Department has no depot to store lakhs of books. Hence, it approached the Education Department to lend its depot but the Education Department has not responded to this plea despite the fact that their depot is lying unused. Hence, loads of books have been stored in a hired depot in the city.

Though Education Department has failed to provide proper facilities to collect and keep the books, postal department has been pro active in this regard.
It has started delivering books to schools by April 16 itself. Since there was a bundh in the city for two days, the books could not be delivered on time but however all the schools in the district will be provided with books by Wednesday.
As many as 10 lakh books have been distributed in the district from first to tenth standard. He said that apart from 10th standard Kannada and English, all other text books are available.

Earlier, teachers had to take the books to their school required, from the depots. Now this additional burden has been taken away.
Further, the teacher used to collect the book transportation cost from the children. Even this practice will be ended.
