Farmer converts wasteland to greenland

Birur: June 4, DHNS

Farmer Ramanaika of Aladahalli in Birur hobli and his family have converted their four acre wasteland into greenland.

Ramanaika, who wanted to contribute to the preservation of environment, did not use chemical fertilisers to make his land green growing sandalwood and Indian gooseberry. He adopted organic farming and used sprinklers in his farm so that not even a single drop of water will go waste.

Ramanaika’s son Shankaranaika had purchased the land in Aladahalli from a farmer about five years ago. There were no irrigation facilities in the land and above all it was not fertile too.

However, Shankaranaika brought 1,300 saplings of sandalwood and same number of Indian gooseberry saplings from Shimoga by spending about Rs 60,000.

Shankaranaika made use of the limited water resource in such a judicious manner and grown saplings confidently that his land has become green within four years.

“It is our duty to preserve the environment and protect animals and birds,” replied Shankaranaika when asked as to why Indian gooseberry was planted.
