Minister opposes Tadadi power plant project

Last Updated 10 June 2009, 19:23 IST

The minister told reporters here on Wednesday that he was against the decision on setting up 4,000 MW ultra mega thermal plant in Tadadi. “The fly-ash emanating from the power plant will harm the environment,” he said.

Stating that he is aware of need for more power in the State, the minister said that he could welcome the project only if scientific studies prove that fly-ash will not be harmful to the environment. “The Centre has to conduct studies to assess the impact of the project on the environment,” he said.

Biodegradable plastic

The minister said that the Government was contemplating rules to curb manufacture of non-biodegradable plastic in the State. The rules on the biodegradable plastic will be finalised after discussion in the Cabinet meeting.

Secretary for Environment Department Kanwarpal said that the existing rules allow production of plastic with 20 microns and above. The State’s intention is to put a total end to manufacturing non-biodegradable plastic.
