Rain lets up in DK, but sea erosion continues

One dead; heavy showers damage houses in north Karnataka

Sea erosion in Ullal region including Kaiko, Hilary Nagar, Mogaveerapatna and Kotepura, intensified even as rain let up in the region. In the light of 15 families shifting to their relatives’ houses after huge waves washing up the walls on Tuesday and Wednesday, the district administration has set up gruel centres at Dharmanagara, Ombathukere and Tipu Sultan School in the region. However, none have occupied any centre, said the officials.

As usual, boulders are being dumped to prevent sea erosion in some parts of Ullal. But

the boulders are unable to stop huge waves from hitting the walls of the houses belonging to the fishermen. Member of the Lok Sabha P Nalin Kumar Kateel visited the affected region on Wednesday and assured all help to the residents.

Dakshina Kannada district received a total of 39.1 mm rainfall on Wednesday as against 6.6 mm on the same day last year. Belthangady taluk received the highest rainfall of 54.3 mm while Sullia taluk received the lowest rainfall of 17.2 while Bantwal, Mangalore and Puttur received 49.8 mm, 38.2 mm and 36.2 mm rainfall respectively. The water-level at Nethravathi river in Bantwal is five metres against the danger level of 8.5 metres.

According to the Meteorological Department, heavy to very heavy rain may occur at isolated places over coastal Karnataka in the next 48 hours.

Udupi

Udupi district recorded a rainfall of 50.53 mm for the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Wednesday. Kundapur taluk received a rainfall of 68.80 mm while Karkala recorded 40.60 mm and Udupi 42.20 mm.

Two houses were partially damaged. The house of Janardhan Poojary was partially damaged as the house walls collapsed owing to heavy rain in Thenkaneediyur village. The house of Thimma Naika was partially damaged. According to Karkala Taluk Office, a house was partially damaged and cattle shed collapsed due to incessant rain.

Shimoga

Heavy rain continued to lash Tirthahalli and Hosanagar taluks, while there was respite in other parts of the district on Wednesday. A tree which became uprooted due to heavy wind paralysed movement of vehicles along State Highway 26 for some time. Rain receded in catchment areas of Linganamakki reservoir also due to which the inflow has come down to 4,574 cusec. Agumbe received 83 mm rain.

North Karnataka

Rains continued in North Karnataka on Wednesday too. In Haveri taluk, four houses collapsed partially due to rains and a betel plantation was completely destroyed. Heavy rain was also reported from Bellary and Hospet, and in the surrounding areas. Incessant rain continued in Dharwad, Bijapur, Belgaum, and Gadag and Uttara Kannada districts.

Kodagu

Rains receded in Kodagu district too. Bhagamandala which usually receives highest rainfall, recorded a mere 27.6 mm rainfall on Wednesday.

Chikmagalur

After a gap of four days, there was sunshine in many parts of Chikmagalur. Agricultural activities which began at a slow pace a few days ago, have gained pace.
