Alarming increase in pollutants

Last Updated 22 June 2010, 16:52 IST

Sources in the Karnataka Pollution Control Board say the lull in monsoon activities in Bangalore has caused alarming increase in atmospheric pollutants. Yeswanthapura, a highly-polluted area of the City touched another high in the recent days.

The sources say, the suspended particulate matter (SPM) is reaching close to 500 mg per metre cubed (ug/m3), whereas it should not exceed 140 ug/m3 at Yeswanthapura, which has a substantial residential area.

Sensitive area

Similar is the case with Victoria Hospital, a sensitive area in terms of pollution, which recorded 165 ug/m3 SPM, while the level should not exceed 70 ug/m3. At Amco Batteries, 163 ug/m3 was recorded against the usual 140 ug/m3.

Officials at the KSPCB said the pollution level in the City is rising but there are still some places which have shown remarkable decrease in the pollutants in the air. Peenya Industrial Area, Whitefield and Yelahanka have become better places to live with remarkable decrease in the suspended particles.
