Towering loans

“Actually I took loan to manage the household expenses. When I couldn’t repay it, I became addicted to alcohol. I used to drink illicit hooch atleast 10 quarters daily. But I heard that the problems can not be solved just by drinking day and night. So I decided to quit and joined this camp,” says Ramegowda.

Rs 400 a day for alcohol

I was earning Rs 500 per day out of which I used to spend Rs 400 for alcohol daily. I started to consume alcohol to get relief from body ache as I work for a timber factory as a wood loader. I used to give only Rs 100 to the house and the condition of house was very bad. Fortunately, I decided to take care of my family and joined here, revealed Krishnappa.

Only drinking

My only work was consuming alcohol throughout the day. I used to go for work 3 days in a week and in the rest of the days, I used to spend my wife’s earnings. Finally, I was disgusted and decided to come here, reveals Seena.

Who will marry me?

I earn Rs 150 per day. But who will give girl to an alcoholic? Though I am getting older, no parents were ready to give their daughter to me. So I felt ashamed and took it as a challenge. I too can lead a happy family without alcohol, says mason Puttanna.

Ban Illegal sale of alcohol

Illegal sale of alcohol is rampant in most of the villages. “Though we approached the Excise department and police, the disciplinary action has not been taken. The only solution for our problem is to ban sale of alcohol,” opined participants.
