The Division Bench comprising Justice V G Sabhahit and Justice A S Bopanna, hearing a Public Interest Litigation on Tuesday, directed the Government to inform the Court about the status of investigations into the issue.

H S Doreswamy, a freedom fighter and Gandhian, has moved the High Court seeking to prevent illegal transport of iron ore under the patronage of some of the prominent political leaders. He had submitted that the illegal mining is rampant in places like Bellary, Chitradurga, Tumkur and Ramanadurga and the forest areas were being encroached.
He contended that the State has failed to act on the report submitted by a panel appointed by the Union Government on the illegal mining.
