There are also hospitals like the one at Byreshwaranagar in Moodalapalya ward, where on an urgency basis, a doctor and paramedical staff are serving on deputation.

Hardly 20 deliveries
“The situation at Pobbatti is so serious that hardly 20 deliveries take place annually. Our idea is to convert such hospitals into general health centres,” sources said. The BBMP’s maternity hospital in Majestic was also closed down due to staff crunch coupled with scarcity of resources. The other four hospitals also register merely 20 deliveries a month, which is better when compared to Pobbatti, but much below than the expectation.
“Our target was at least 60 deliveries a month in each of these hospitals,” sources added.

“The prime reason behind the decreasing number of delivery cases is staff crunch. Each such hospital must have at least three doctors while these hospitals are dependent on a single doctor who remains on duty round the clock,” the sources said.

Slips down
Deliveries in hospitals have come down drastically that in five years it has slipped from 25,000 deliveries a year to 17,000.
