CM cries halt to war memorial construction

Last Updated 02 July 2010, 03:51 IST

The memorial will not be built at the Indira Gandhi Musical Foundation Park as decided earlier but will come up at a new site.

The announcement by Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Thursday in the Legislative Council stunned the Opposition during the Question Hour, as it rose to fight the government’s war memorial plans.

JD(S) leader M C Naniah led the attack saying the government plan had come when green cover across Bangalore was depleting. “In such a situation, a park close to the Legislative House is now marked for construction of a  war memorial,” he lamented. As the debate raged, Yeddyurappa stood up and said the war memorial would come up in a good place.

“Construction work on the memorial will be stopped. The government has received a good number of petitions from the public seeking stoppage of the work. We will protect the park,” Yeddyurappa told the Council.
