Outlining the change in the party’s political line after the conclusion of a three-day Central Committee (CC) meeting, CPM general secretary Prakash Karat said that the party has adopted a different line from that of those taken in the Coimbatore  Congress. “At that time we were supporting the UPA,” said Karat.

However, Karat admitted that building up a third front would take time. The CC, too, in its statement issued on Friday said: “The CPM will seek the cooperation of those non-Congress secular parties who are willing to come together to take up peoples issues, defend secularism and oppose erosion of national sovereignty both within Parliament and outside.”
Karat attacked the Central government for ignoring the Trinmool Congress’s “links with the Maoists.” But he rejected the idea of increased operations by security forces and said that “security forces do not differentiate between the tribals and the Maoists.”

The meeting also finalised the draft for extended CC meeting scheduled in Vijaywada in August. Karat said the party would come with an elaborated strategy for Kerala and Bengal.
