“By working with experts at the JWFT centre, I have been able to apply classroom learning to real-world situations much faster than my peers,” says Chandanasree, a second-year MTech student of NIT, Calicut.

Besides such internship programmes, the JFWT centre — located on a 50-acre campus in Whitefield, Bangalore — also invites young college students who are interested in research, to pursue entry-level programmes.

The UG-level programme is meant for fresh graduates who wish to work in laboratory research. Through a series of rotating assignments — typically over a period of two years — students receive professional development skills, get to work with world-class mentors, and access global networking that cuts across GE’s businesses.

The Early Identification Programme(EID), which is shorter in duration, gives students an opportunity to work alongside bright scientists.

While the training period for undergraduate and postgraduate students may vary from three to six months, PhD students are given more time at the centre.

In the Edison Engineering Development Programme (EEDP),  core engineering skills are taught through three challenging projects and engineering students work under scientists for two to three years.

They also get to enroll for a master’s programme in any of the top technical institutions such as the IITs, Georgia Tech, Purdue and Eindhoven (The Netherlands), where they are sponsored.

Students doing BTech, MTech or PhD can apply for the EID programme.
GE has been sending out information through placement cells of premier institutions, while students from other colleges can also apply through gecareer.com, where they would find step by step instruction for applying.

JFWTC does pay a stipend for the students for the period of time they work with them.
