Waterlogging slows down traffic
Evening showers adversely affected traffic in the City on Thursday. However, there was no gridlock even as the vehicles crawled on roads.
The rains, however, had its share of damage. Three cars were damaged as a massive tree uprooted at the Oberoi Hotel premises on MG Road. However, there was no loss of life.
Waterlogging and overflowing drains slowed down the pace of traffic. Police had to manually control traffic flow as signal lights went off at a few junctions. Vehicles piled up on roads, especially on those stretches where Metro rail work is in progress. The problem worsened in the evening with people returning home from offices, police said. The central parts of Bangalore and roads in around the Majestic area were the worst hit. There was bumper-to-bumper traffic on Vatal Nagaraj Road, Mysore Road, Chord Road, Magadi Road and Yeswanthpura between 3 pm to 7 pm.
The situation was no better on Bannerghatta Road, Bilekal junction, Garuda Mall, Hosur Road, Sanjaynagar junction, Jayanagar and JP Nagar.
Rainwater gushed into houses in low-lying areas. Wilson Gardens, areas near Kamakhya Theatre, Jagajyothi Layout and Lakkasandra were waterlogged. Complaints of trees being uprooted were reported across the City, particularly from South Bangalore. Tree falls were reported in Malleswaram, Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Girinagar and Basavanagudi.
The City recorded 39.4 mm of rain by 8.30 pm while the airport received 27.4 mm rains. The Met Department has forecast a cloudy sky with few spells of rain in many areas on Friday.
