Protest against wild elephant menace
The labourers and the public in and around Polibetta will stage a protest against wild elephant menace and the forest department on August 6.
Addressing a press meet here, Polibetta Rural Development Committee President Mookonda Viju Subramani said “farmers are not only losing their crops but also losing their lives due to wild elephant attack. Unfortunately, forest department has not taken any measure to solve the menace.”
The labourers who work in the coffee estates are worried over their life. Nine persons have lost their lives in the last five months in the district. The protest will be led by taluk BJP Block President Puliyanda Bopanna. About 5000 people will take part in the protest. If the Forest Department fails to initiate action, then we will stage a protest in front of the DFO’s office.
Taluk Panchayat member Ramadas said that the forest department is not taking concrete measure to contain wild elephant menace. The wild elephants reappear even after it was chased to the forest.
Earlier the elephants used to enter the fields during night time, but now they roam around in the fields in day time. The government has not provided any compensation or jobs to the families of those who have lost their lives in the elephant attacks”, said Polibetta Gram Panchayat President Kuttanda Vasantha.
In the absence of trainers to tame the elephants, it has been difficult for the students to move freely in the place. A school bus has been arranged by the Gram Panchayat for the transportation of students from Emmegundi village.
Kuttanda Deepak, Puliyanda Sowmya Ganapathi were present.
