Making the first impression

Last Updated 05 August 2010, 12:06 IST

Most of us pay a great deal of attention to the finer details of home décor, only to miss out the singular most important place in the house, the foyer. This little space between your front door and the rest of your home is often neglected, primarily because we feel it lacks the necessary space to put in anything of substance. However, any foyer, even a small one can be done up in multiple ways. Decorating your foyer should be such that it serves as a precursor to the wonderful home that you have within.

If you have to work with a foyer that may be smaller than what is normally seen, you have no reason to fret. No space is so small that it cannot be done up well. Let’s start with the walls. While light shades are commonly used to give an impression of more space, often the principle doesn’t work in really small spaces. Instead, try and get bold and make the walls of your foyer an interior décor statement. Go in for bold shades, perhaps red or even chocolate brown. Make sure that the shade is complementary to what you have used in the next room or else you will end up jarring the senses of your guests.

Add some flowers

Fresh flowers are always a wonderful way to spruce up a dull looking spot. If your foyer is too small to accommodate a small carved wooden table, then have some flower pot brackets installed on your walls. You could then have neatly trimmed flowing creepers coming out of them and cascade down your walls. Or you could have some really dainty looking flowers placed in there. For those a little more adventurous, you now get various sizes of fish aquariums that can be wall mounted. No matter what you put up on the wall, select a suitable light enhancement to be placed above or below it.

If art is more your style, then use a singular wall to put up a stunning painting that you may have been hoarding. Once again use appropriate lighting to highlight your painting. If not a painting, be creative – hang up a Persian floor rug or better yet invest in that expensive wall paper that you have been eyeing for a while now. Remember that the foyer is a small place to cover and expensive wallpapers for this space will not really pinch you.

If flowers and paintings don’t really interest you, then look up at the ceiling. Depending on the headroom that you have, invest in an appropriately shaped and sized chandelier.
The one characteristic of this piece of interior decoration is that it can change the face of any space that it is placed in. Your guests will be floored with your entryway.

Choose a spot in your foyer where you can hang up a mirror. While this works as a space enhancement technique, it is also a great thing to have when you are rushing out of your home, or preening just before you open the door to your guests. Measure your foyer and see if you have the space to comfortably fit in a rectangular carved table. This can serve to hold up any of the decorative elements mentioned, of a flower vase or a small aquarium or even a mirror. What’s more, you can add an ornamental bowl for the family’s keys so that no one goes through the morning rush yelling out for them.

And for the final touches, give your front door a look-see. Replace your door knobs and knockers with something more attractive made of art glass or brass. Don’t flinch when it comes to buying a door mat that is inviting and sturdy. A foyer, no matter how small is the entry way to your little world. Make it count.
