Theme for a splash

DECOR

Children have a fantasy world they retreat to ever so often. Thanks to the excessive media that children are exposed to, these fantasy worlds are often recreations of cartoons.

As indulgent parents, we of course understand this and would like to give our children a place where they can live this fantasy. A lot of care is therefore taken when it comes to the décor of children’s rooms.

To take things a step forward, why not extend the fantasy into the bathroom as well. Most children are water babies and love to spend time splashing about. More so, at the beginning as well as the end of a tiring school day. This alone should be enough inspiration for parents to pay attention to children’s bathroom décor.

Now the first step to this would be to narrow down a couple of themes that would hold the interest of your child. You have to consider here, how long this will continue to fascinate your child.

A four-year-old would like nothing better than a bubble bath with the entire star cast of the Looney Tunes, but a six-year-old would rather have Ben 10 and his gang around to fight the mysterious forces of the underwater world. Try finding a theme that will hold your child’s fancy for a decent amount of time.  If you want to segregate themes based on gender, then every girl would love a Barbie theme –  the pinks, frills, accessories are every little princess’ dream come true. This theme can be spread across the bathroom mat, tiles, shower curtain and even the little accessories like soap trays, toilet seat covers, toothbrush holder etc.

As for the boys, bring on the entire brigade of superheroes. A few bath time rubber toys of their favourite superhero would be a priceless addition. This way, getting your little tykes to take a shower will not always be a chore.

Seaside theme

For a more general child-based theme, the sea side is a great theme to recreate. The sun, sand, seashells combination is sure to work. With any theme you select, make sure that you have the right accessories to go with it. A seaside theme would mean seashell toothbrush holders and soap trays, anti-skid mats shaped like a conch and more.  While on the underwater theme, you can choose to incorporate the cast of the Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo and of course Shark Tale.

Having Free Willy painted as jumping out of the bathtub would be a great idea.
If none of these seem to hold your child’s interest, then create an exclusive underwater world that comes alive at night. Include lots of glow-in-the-dark fish and sea creatures from the curtain rods and on the wall. A simple and practical way to light up the bathroom for those occasional midnight tinkles.

Safety matters

Themes and décor are essential for children’s bathrooms but safety too plays an important role as well. Avoid using any accessories or fittings that run the possibility of breaking or are delicate.  Children do not and should not have to be careful about breaking things when they are in the bathroom.

Choose bath mats for the tub that have a good amount of traction to keep it in place.

A mat helps

A mat in contrasting colour will help remind your child where to place their feet when they climb into the tub.  Make sure the stools have rubber bottoms so that children don’t slip off when they groggily climb on to brush their teeth.

Built-in storage space is essential. Keep only what your child needs in front of him. The rest can be packed and locked away.

Any bathroom cleaning items have to be kept under lock and key. There are several décor ideas for children’s bathrooms. Once you zero in on one you just have to tweak it to your advantage.
