Noted Marathi poet Narayan Surve passes away
Eminent Marathi poet Narayan Surve passed away on Monday after brief illness in neighouring Thane district, family sources said.
He was 83.
Surve was a renowned social activist and actively participated in the labour movement. Expressing grief over Surve's demise Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said,"We have lost a legendary poet and thinker who represented the common man."
Deputy CM Chaggan Bhujbal said, "Surve had become the voice of the depressed class through his poetry."
Union Heavy Industries minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said Surve was "people's poet and gave words to the pain and suffering of the people who had no voice."
"Surve was the voice of Mumbai's working class in Marathi literature," he said.
Union Power minister Sushilkumar Shinde said through his poems Surve vociferously proclaimed social revolution.
"He created a unique style of poetry using colloquial language of workers," Shinde said. The minister described Surve's poems like 'Majhe Vidyapeeth', 'Jahirnama' and 'Aisa Ga Mi Brahma' as his significant works.
