A tearjerker all the way

K C Asok

Aathmakatha
Malayalam (U)
Cast:  Srinivasan, Sharbani Mukherjee, Jagathy Sreekumar.
Director:  Premlal

Director Premlal here paints the dark world of visually challenged Kochubaby (Srinivasan). A rare genetic defect of retina, at the age of 13, snatches away from him the world of colour and light.

Undaunted, Kochubaby proves that a person of his disability can brighten others’ lives (literally too, with his candle-making skills).

The mathematics for the blind, which his mother had taught him, and “what is not taught in schools” give him an intuitive sight of sorts.

Enter Mary (Sharbani Mukherjee), a blind orphan, and his world turns brighter. A healthy and beautiful baby girl is born to them.

But don’t expect a sparkling future... tragedy strikes again and watching the movie for 2 hrs 30 mins becomes more or less a protracted pain.

With no end in sight to agony, it is essentially a film aimed at the tear ducts.
