September braces for torrential rain
Brace for a wet September with overflowing rivers triggering floods in the southern peninsula, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned.
The south west monsoon, after remaining on the lower side for most parts of June and July, is working overtime. The IMD has forecast 115 per cent of monsoon rain (with an error margin of 15 per cent) in September, which may result in flooding of peninsular India.
Even the withdrawal of monsoon may be delayed from the north-west. This means rain can be anticipated during the Commonwealth Games that starts on October 3.
“The withdrawal from the north-west can be delayed by one week to 15 days,” Ajit Tyagi, IMD Director-General, told Deccan Herald.
Typically the monsoon withdrawal begins in the first week of September. By the end of the month, the south-monsoon recedes from the entire country marking the end of monsoon season. But this time, it is still raining in the north-west.
