Science Centre awaits for space
M angalore University denies land inside FMC college
Like ‘Suvarna Samskritika Samuchaya’ and General Thimmaiah Memorial proposals, the much awaited Science Centre for Kodagu district too is facing the same hurdle of lack of land.
When JD(S) - BJP coalition was ruling the State, the then Deputy Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa had announced Rs one crore for the setting up of Science Centre in the district in 2007. Accordingly, the district administration has reserved land belonging to FMC College in the town for the construction of Science Centre. However, the Mangalore University has declared that the land will not be handed over for Science Centre. University Vice-Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy had informed media persons that the district administration was already informed about University’s decision. He had clarified that Universities cannot hand over its land for any other purposes as per rules.
However, there is no proper documents with the University with regard to FMC College. The college has RTC for its 50 cents of land only and hence the University is trying to obtain RTC for the remaining land.
Many argue that students in the district too will be benefited if a Science Centre was established in FMC College premises. Students can study and conduct research in the Science Centre. Since the University has denied land, only government can take a final decision for the setting up of Science Centre.
Science teachers point out that the Bangalore Agriculture University had handed over its land for private bus stand. Hence, the Mangalore University also can take similar step to set up science centre, which is useful for students.
