Security for Commonwealth Games is supreme: HC

Last Updated 15 September 2010, 13:23 IST

"We are holding the Games under the perceived threat. So, we have to hold it under the strict security arrangement," a bench headed by Justice Pradeep Nandrajog said while hearing a petition of a person challenging the decision to close a sports complex for the general people.

Advocate Atul Wadhera, who filed the petition, contended the closure of the Siri Fort complex is "illegal, arbitrary, unwarranted and unjust". The bench, however, was not convinced by his submission and rejected his plea saying that it was needed in order to sanitise the complex from security threats.

Wadhera had sought a direction for removal of the restraint notice and make available areas of all sports facilities except the game which is to be played in Commonwealth Games scheduled from October 3-14 According to the petitioner, many sportsmen and sportswomen, who have been practising regularly to improve their skill, were affected by the closure of the complex besides some senior persons who use the complex to remain physically fit on medical advise.

"Some old people, who are getting treatment for arthritis and asthma-like diseases, will suffer more due to such a long break," the petitioner had said.
