Did you always want to pursue a formal course in dance but were disheartened because there wasn’t a fine arts college in your vicinity? You can now acquire a university degree in the fine arts or a diploma in Bharatanatyam, staying right where you are and even continuing to hold on to your job, thanks to an off-campus offering from Kalai Kaviri College, Trichy.

This is a one-of-its-kind off-campus programme in Bharatanatyam. It is a joint collaboration between the Business Development Centre of Bharathidasan University, Trichy, and Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts.

The college is affiliated to the Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli and approved by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It is also accredited by NAAC.

People who have taken up the off-campus programmes include students and professionals from Pondi-cherry, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Haryana, and Assam in India, and from countries like Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Oman, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Germany, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Norway, Switzer-land, France, Canada and the United States of America.

So far, 91 students have taken up the diploma programme while 31 have taken up the bachelor’s programme in Fine Arts (BFA) while 98 students have taken up the master’s programme (MFA).

Programme structure

Kalai Kaviri has study centres for these courses in several Indian cities like Bangalore and Mumbai, besides foreign cities like Connecticut in USA, Toronto in Canada, Muscat in Oman, and Bradford in the United Kingdom.

The college will supply the students with both digital format study material (audio and video) and printed books. The programme includes contact classes, assignments, seminars and dissertation work.

Age is no bar, but the takers of the Bharatanatyam diploma programme need graduation in any discipline with proficiency in practice and theory in Bharatanatyam.

On the other hand, the BFA and MFA courses in Bharatanatyam can be done concurrently by students in their UG or PG courses. But if the student has 10 years’ experience in teaching Bharatanatyam, he/ she can take up the BFA programme, even without passing the Plus-two or higher secondary examination.
