New York mosque close to 9/11 site starts weekly service

There have been, however, two violations and the mosque and Islamic centre have been reported for "hazardous" conditions - holes in floors and lack of an automatic sprinkler system, the New York Post reported on Wednesday.

The owners of the building have, meanwhile, got temporary permits from the city administration to use it, a spokesperson said.

US President Barack Obama has also backed plans to build the Islamic centre near the site of the Sep 11, 2001 terror attacks in New York, saying the US was at war against terrorism and not Islam.

"You can build a church on a site, you can build a synagogue on a site, if you could build a Hindu temple on a site, you should be able to build a mosque," Obama said.
