Toilet staff protest with sewage
As many as 15 workers poured sewage over themselves on Thursday at the BBMP head office, to protest against being sacked from their jobs at a public toilet.
The protesters worked at a public toilet near Chandra Bhavana with Manjunath, who had the contract for the maintenance of the toilet. When Manjunath’s contract was terminated, the new contractors, mahalakshmi and Nagaraj terminated the services of the staff hired by the earlier contractor.
Stating that they had no other job skills, they appealed to the BBMP officials to let them continue to work. With the BBMP not responding, the workers resorted to the unusual, if horrifying protest. They warned that they would intensify their protest if they were not reinstated.
A BBMP press note said that Dalit Sangharsh Samiti had appealed to the BBMP engineers to withdraw their previous order of scrapping the contract of the earlier contractor. It said the general secretary of the Samithi and others who participated in the agitation had “nothing to do with the toilet near Chandra Bhavan”.
