However, thanks to lack of proper publicity and negligence on the part of the Government, the development of Byatarayanapura has been totally stalled.
The village has earned importance in the backdrop of a popular incident, which took place here. Lord Shri Venkateshwara, before being installed in the form of an idol in Tirupathi, stayed in Byatarayanapura for some time and took rest here. His stay has earned the village, the name Byatarayanapura and also the mountain on which he stayed, as Byataraya.
In Telugu ‘Byata’ means, the one who resides on a mountain, hence, the name is still popular till today. This mountain, today, comes under the jurisdiction of the Department of Social Forestry.
A lot of Eucalyptus and other valuable trees are grown on this mountain. The Muzarai Department had long back constructed a temple for Shri Venkateshwara Swamy, popularly known as Byatarayaswamy.
However, today, it is in ruins, without any repair. Earlier, there were no steps to reach the temple, one had to cross stones and boulders, trees and shrubs to reach the temple. At present, there are steps to reach the temple. Though there is a water supply here, however, there is no pipelines laid, making it difficult for the devotees to manage.
Annual jathra
During the jathras, the devotees are forced to use mineral water bottles and water available in plastic pouches. Since the temple was constructed long back, the gopura is in a dilapidated condition. The Government has not bothered to pay attention towards the temple.
The idols made out of mud, installed in the gopura, have been constantly painted with limestone, and hence, have lost their lustre. On the left side of the temple, there is a trench measuring about 20 metres deep and a natural underground tunnel takes the visitors to the depths, where idols of Nagadevatas have been installed.
Earlier, this passage was closed by the growth of bushes and shrubs. Every year, the Muzarai Department conducts the Byatarayaswamy jathra, just for the heck of conducting it. Thousands of the people come to temple, on the occasion. For several families, Lord Byataraya Swamy is their Kuladevata. Several devotees visit the temple from far-off places. They come in bullock carts, tractors, tempos, two-wheelers and also by padayathra and seek the darshan of the deity.
Under construction
Right now, the roads are being constructed. The Muzarai Department should take keen interest in the welfare of the temple, give proper publicity and facilities and increase the number of visitors to this region. The village members feel that the place required more publicity and popularity.
Also, a fence should be constructed around the mountain, to avoid illegal encroachment. Illegal mining should also be stopped by taking stringent measures.
The people of this region feel that, if the temple was revived and reconstructed, it should also earn popularity on the likes of Bangaratirupathi, Chickkatirupathi and make the Byataraya Betta famous, through proper progress and development.
