VIT University was founded in 1984 as a self-financing institution, then known as Vellore Engineering College, promoted by the North Arcot Education and Charitable Trust. The institution, headed by Mr G Viswanathan, a former parliamentarian and minister in the Tamil Nadu Government, is housed in a sprawling 300 acres of land with a built up area of 2.5 lakh sq.m.
Mr Viswanathan, the Chancellor of the University leads the implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan that aims to leverage the institute's existing strengths and ensure its rapid progress as an internationally recognised institution.

VIT, with its commitment to innovate is the first university in starting a 5-year Integrated programmes such as B.Tech (Chemical Engineering) with MTech (Bio-process engineering), BTech (Civil Engineering) with MTech (Construction Technology and Management), MTech Pharmaceutical Chemistry, MTech Automotive Electronics, MTech sensor system technology, MSc Biomedical Genetics, BTech with MBA - 5 year Integrated programme.
The University also offers short-term certificate courses in foreign languages like German, French, Chinese and Japanese.
Admission Procedure
VIT aspirants need to take up an entrance examination that tests their academic and general knowledge. The VIT Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE) and the Management Aptitude Test are conducted in more than 40 cities across the country. Besides, the University also offers a system of multipoint entry to individual learners based on a credit system in all its academic programmes.
Looking beyond the classroom
At VIT, much importance is given to holistic individual development of students. Students and faculty also serve the neighbouring villages and towns in a number of ways, providing community support.
Vellore Institute of Technology has been providing all possible amenities to students on campus. It has 15 hostels for students. The International Students' Hostel offers single room facilities with ISD in all rooms. VIT also houses a 3,000 square metre hospital with well-qualified medical professionals on duty and adequate stocks of emergency medicines with an ambulance on call.
Academic facilities
VIT has a multi-crore state-of-the art computer facility with over 1,000 computers and a sophisticated 7 storey Technology Tower. Most of the schools in VIT are equipped with smart classrooms, whose array of hi-tech equipment enable faculty to conduct classes in such a manner that students can copy every available resource at the click of the mouse.
To further complement classroom studies, the university utilises the Education Satellite (EDUSAT) for two-way communication with other institutions in the country, while video conferencing facility paves the way for easy and uninterrupted interaction with professors abroad.
In its objective to make all students employable graduates, VIT has setup language laboratories for the students to enhance their communication skills as per industry needs.
VIT’s centrally air-conditioned Periyar EVR Central Library is spread over 54,000 sq.ft. and is recognised as one of the best information resource centres in the region. It has over 1,26,300 books, 1,48,353 documents, 560 video cassettes and 14,220 back volumes of scientific and technical periodicals, 193 audio cassettes and 7,032 CDs.

There is an enormous scope for the successful growth of budding entrepreneurs and start-up companies with viable commercial ideas. In partnership with the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, has set up a state-of-the-art Technology Business Incubator on campus. A Product Innovation Centre with state-of-the-art equipment for the development and testing of Biotechnology based products has been established.
