Bharatanatyam Karana Viniyoga Malika - a garland of Karanas’, a DVD by Sundari Santhanam of Bharata Nrityasala and Dr S Ganesh is being released on January 19, between 6 and 8 pm at Suchitra Cinema and Cultural Academy, 36, 9th Main, Banashankari 2nd stage.
This project, Karanas in action with reference to thematic dance, focusses on the undeniable importance of meaningful practical application of the theory of art.
Dedicated to Dr Padma Subrahmanyam (Director, Nrityodaya, Chennai), the DVD will be released by Sudha Murthy (Chairperson, Infosys Foundation).
A wide variety of themes from the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata, mythological works like Bhagavata and Halasyapurana to imaginary situations from rural, nomadic, and romantic lives involving both human and animal motifs have been incorporated in the verses.
Aiming to help serious students of dance understand and appreciate the Karana system better, illustrations of Sthanakas, caris, Nrttahastas, Angaharas, Mandalas and Pindibandhas have been provided for logicality and background.
Commencing her career in the field of art at the age of 12, Sundari Santhanam is one of the senior disciples of Dr Padma Subrahmanyam.
Few of her achievements include the choreography of a number of masterpieces like Raja Raja Chola dance-drama, presentation of papers on topics like Nritta Technique of Bharata and publication of Padma
Subrahmanyam - Oru Sagaptham, a biography of her Guru. Dr S Ganesh is a teacher, linguist, researcher and an Avadhani who has a doctorate in Avadhanas and has performed over 650 of them.
