Goa revolt fizzles out
Panaji, DHNS:
After three days of political brinkmanship, the group of nine MLAs, including three from the Nationalist Congress Party who had threatened to bring down the 7-month-old Congress-led coalition government in Goa, went tamely back to the pavilion.

A squabble over who among them would be accommodated in the Digambar Kamat ministry, split the group and helped the Congress-NCP leaders achieve a breakthrough on Saturday.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel announced in Delhi that the crisis had blown over and that independent MLA Babush Monserrate had pledged unconditional support to the government.

Lashing out at Mr Vishwajeet Rane for trying to bargain for a Cabinet berth for MGP MLA Sudin Dhavlikar, Mr Monserrate told journalists here that Rane was taking advantage of the situation and had “stabbed” the group in the back.

Son of  Speaker Pratapsingh Rane, Vishwajeet, an independent MLA was among the three ministers who resigned on Wednesday, triggering the crisis in government. He rushed to Delhi early on Saturday with a fresh list of demands, creating a split among the rebel group. Mr Monserrrate claimed that Vishwajeet was the mastermind behind the revolt, but had ended up misleading the others.

“The crisis is over, let them all go back,” he said. Though the BJP denied Congress allegations that the saffron party had been behind the moves to topple its government in Goa, Mr Monserrate said he had met with BJP leader Manohar Parrikar and Mr Vishwajeet Rane in Mumbai a few days before the state assembly election, when moves were launched to topple the government.

“I don’t deny the meeting,” Mr Monserrate said, but claimed he had nothing to do with the SEZs and did not know the Rahejas whose SEZ was recently scrapped in Goa.

Congress leader B K Hariprasad accused the SEZ lobby of instigating moves to bring down the Congress government in Goa.
