Speaking to mediapersons before inaugurating a seminar organised by the Federation of Urban Cooperative Banks in Bangalore, Yechury felt that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government should make changes in the tax structure to offset the losses suffered by oil companies.
Enough profits
“Our oil prices are linked to the international market prices. But the oil companies have already made enough profits and they can be asked to offload their profits as the common man cannot be further burdened by the price rise,” he stated.
On the third alternative, Yechury said they had been working on it for the last 10 years.
“This country needs an alternative to the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In the present circumstances, we preferred Congress because it was secular,” he averred.
Nuclear deal
On the nuclear deal, Yechury said the United Progressive Alliance government had assured the Left parties of getting back to them after talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
“But so far they have not come to us,” he added.
