Of the many unpleasant things one has to do in life, working on Sundays is surely on top of the list for majority. There are certain professions that require people to work on Sundays while the rest of the world is making merry. Vijay Kumar Trivedi, who owns a modular kitchen store, works on Sundays as it is a business requirement.
He says, “Working on Sundays is not a good option but, my business demands it. I miss socialising with friends and also miss spending time with my son on Sundays.”
Tina S, manager of a beauty salon takes Tuesdays off and does not mind working on Sundays. “The staff at the salon is like a family to me and I enjoy spending time with them. Also, we get many clients on Sundays and it is nice interacting with them,” she says happily.
Work cultures are changing rapidly and having a fixed work schedule and off on Sundays is a luxury for those who work in the BPO sector. Arun Patro, manager for Marketing and Sales, Tutor Vista, laments that he has to work in accordance with the US timing and many a times on Sundays also.
“I hardly get to meet my friends and can’t spend much time with my family either. My father is free only on Sundays and I work on Sundays and eventually, it takes a toll on you even though you might enjoy your work,” he says.
For Gowri, a media professional working on Sundays is downright depressing. “There are hardly any people in the office and I know all my friends are out having fun. I utterly dislike working on Sundays but, can’t help it,” she complains.
Medicine is considered a noble profession not for nothing. The sacrifices one has to make are numerous. “It is no fun working on a Sunday. But, the satisfaction that I derive from knowing that I have helped a person in need is worth it,” opines Rashmi, a doctor.
Worse hit are the spouses of those who have to work on Sundays. “It is sad when my wife has to work on Sundays. I get a holiday only on Sundays and we don’t get to spend time together. I envy my friends who go out on Sundays with their wives. But, it is her profession and I am supportive of her,” says Rahul, Rashmi’s husband.
