Sakshi Gulati talks to Srabanti Chakrabarti
about her latest film Contract and her
experiences of working with Ram Gopal Verma.
How does it feel stepping into the glamour world through an RGV film?
Though this is my first big film, I am not really new to the glamour world. After completing my graduation in Economics from Delhi University, I started my career in modelling. I was a finalist for the Miss India 2007 pageant after winning the Miss Delhi 2006 contest (smiles). Contract is not my first film either, I had done a small role in Delhi Heights. So technically, neither am I a debutante nor is Contract my first film. However, this is my first major film. I am grateful to Ramu ji for giving me this break.
How did you get selected for this role?
I was working hard for a good break in Bollywood and had already completed my training in Kathak and Salsa. I also finished a course on acting by Barry John and had come to Mumbai in December 2007, looking for a break. A friend of mine told me that Ram Gopal Verma was looking for a new face for his next film and that I should try my luck. So I went to Ramu ji's office immediately and had a preliminary meeting with the casting director. Ramu ji came next and discussed the entire storyline and character with me. Before I knew what was happening I appeared for the screen test and got selected. To be frank with you, I am clueless as to why he opted for me. Guess there was something which clicked instantly when he saw me.
Tell us something about your role in the film.
As the name suggests, Contract deals with a situation when the underworld meets terrorism. I am playing a character called Iya in the movie. She is deeply involved with the underworld and is related to the ‘boss man’. As the film progresses, she falls for the male protagonist, played by Advik Mahajan. While it is not a completely negative character, there are definite shades of grey in my role. This film was a great experience for me. My father was in the Army, so adventure has always been there in my blood. I have done many stunts in the movie.
How did it feel being directed by RGV? Is he a hard task master?
My experience with Ramu ji can be summed up in one word, marvellous. The best part of working with him is that despite being so experienced and technically sound, he always gave complete freedom to newcomers like me. I had enough freedom to emote in my scenes. Unlike the image that is known to everyone, Ramu ji is a very soft person. Plus both, Advik Mahajan (the hero of the film) and I being from Punjab, there was a lot of bonhomie on the sets.
Any memorable incident that took place during the shooting?
Contract has been extensively shot in Thailand and Mumbai. There was one scene in the mid-sea of Pataya where we would be in a yacht and I have to say a long dialogue. But before we could start our shooting, the gear box of the launch broke down. The sea that day was very rough and we got stuck in the mid-sea for a few hours. It was quite a difficult situation for everyone and I don’t think I will be able to forget that easily.
What next?
I have not yet decided. I am not under any contractual obligations to do films only with Ramu ji. I am listening to a number of scripts and have not yet decided which one to go for.
