The Veena Seshanna Memorial National Award was presented to Kalpagam Swaminathan by I M Vittala Murthy Secretary Youth Services and Sports while the Swaramurthy V N Rao Memorial National Award was presented to R N Thyagarajan and Dr R N Tharanathan.
The birth centenary celebrations of Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer consisting of musical performances will be held till July 26. However the 40th Music Conference with the theme of Semmangudi, his life and achievement, his research in music, will begin from July 28. The conference will commence with expert sessions on Semmangudi while the evening music concerts will be held in the evening till August 3.
Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer was born on July 25, 1908 and was considered to be one of the greatest Carnatic vocalists of the twentieth century. He had received many awards like Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, Isai Perarignar from Tamil Nadu and Kalidas Samman from Madhya Pradesh and was the youngest recipient of the Sangeetha Kalanidhi awarded by the Music Academy in 1947.
The Fortieth Music Conference and the birth centenary celebrations of Semmangudi is being held at The Bangalore Gayana Samaja, K R Road.
