The family was woken by Bob, the three-year-old African grey parrot, whose growling became frantic as the flames spread.
The trio, along with the bird, escaped the burning property. They suffered smoke inhalation while the parrot survived unscathed.
Sam Hall said: “I used to find Bob very annoying with his growling and squawking, but not now. He saved our lives. We just got out in time. As soon as we got outside, the fire took over the whole house.”
Hall, 59, who is divorced, said he may now reward the bird with a female companion. “I am going to get him a treat, some new toys, a swing, a bell and a mirror. It might also be the right time to get him a mate.”
