Jackfruit junction
Kolar: Chelur, a small village located at a distance of 20 km from Tumkur, has always been famous for jackfruits. Jackfruits grown here in the dense groves are popularly known as Chelur halasu. They are considered to be the best in taste and also of a better yield.
Normally, the month of June is the best season for jackfruits here. Heaps of jackfruits are sold here by the roadside at throw-away rates. An equal number is also transported to distant cities like Bombay, Coimbatore, Agra and Chennai.
The jackfruits of Chelur have an interesting mythological history too. According to locals, jackfruits grown in this region have a divine quality in them, besides the good taste. It is said that Gods in the heaven too appreciate Chelur jackfruit for its taste. Due to this belief, even to this day, people offer the first yield to all the temples in the village.
Unfortunately, due to untimely rains, the yield this year has been severely affected. Yet the total sale of Chelur jackfruits is the highest when compared to the other regions in the district.
