Many reasons have been cited for the bad performance and the Department of Pre-University Education (PUE) claims an expert committee has been constituted to bring out the measures to improve the performance.
SG Hegde, Commissioner, PUE department rued that he was not happy with the pass percentage and said that, “The main reason for students’ bad performance is that this set of candidates who appeared for the II PU March ‘08 examinations are the batch of students who had appeared for the SSLC Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) pattern question paper of 60 marks.
Preliminary analysis
This posed as an inability as the students were incapable of answering descriptive questions. This is as per the preliminary analysis made by the Expert Committee constituted by the PUE department.”
He further said that the students of first year PU do not study seriously and lecturers too do a liberal evaluation to promote students to second year PU.
“Liberal valuation is not the policy of the PUE department and lecturers need to strictly evaluate the students’ performance. Students who need to be detained for bad performance at first year PU are promoted and the implications are seen in the results of the second year PU,” cited SG Hegde. Talking about the measures taken by the PUE department to improvise II PU results, SG Hegde said, “Remedial teaching for students weak in studies would be included in the forthcoming academic year.
Bridge course
This remedial teaching would typically include about two hours of extra classes to students who will be identified in the beginning of academic year.
A Bridge Course for the SSLC students would also be made mandatory, to teach them about certain topics in the PU syllabus. There is a vast difference in the SSLC syllabus and the PU syllabus and this has been cited as the major impediment for student’s performance in the examination.”
Attendance of 75 per cent in the first year PU has been made compulsory. The PUE Department has recruited 485 PU lecturers to facilitate the measures taken. Special training and orientation would be given to all lecturers as part of motivation programme and to encourage them to teach students with innovative methods.
The II PU results will be put up on Saturday, 3 pm, at all colleges teaching pre-university course across the State. The pass certificate of successful candidates and the marks card-cum-application of the failed students will be sent to the concerned colleges within few days.
Provision for issue of photo copies of valued answer scripts in all the subjects and revaluation and retotalling of valued answer scripts has been made. Applications regarding the same are available in all PU colleges.
