Addressing presspersons here, the Bidar district president of the Sangh Basavaraj Thambake alleged that the political parties had no concern for the farmers and exploited the agrarian community.
He said in 1960 the expenditure on food grains was 60 per cent of the total income of a person, which had declined to 10 per cent only. This was because the minimum support price for food grain procurement was too low. Farmers were leading a life of abject poverty, which was compelling them to commit suicide, Thambake added.
He pointed out that the Congress and the BJP were levelling charges against each other while exploiting farmers. This meant that both the parties had their share in poor economic condition of the farmers.
He requested the President of India Pratibha Patil to intervene and ask the governments to increase the minimum support price for food grain procurement.
