Have you ever wondered what the world would look like without flowers. Colours and flowers are the most magnificent gifts of nature. There are thousands of flowers on earth, but do you know which is the largest and rarest of them all?
The Rafflesia Arnoldii is the largest and rarest single flower in the world, which is found in the rainforests of Indonesia. It can grow 3-feet across and may weigh upto 10 kgs! Amazingly, it is a parasitic plant which lacks roots, stems, and leaves. It attaches itself to a host plant to obtain water and nutrients. But the Rafflesia smells awful— like rotting flesh! An interesting fact is that its flowers bloom only once a year and live for five to seven days.
Another uncommon flower is the bell shaped Titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum).
It is the biggest flower and also known as the ‘corpse flower’ for its unpleasant odour. Like the Rafflesia, the fully open flower emits a repulsive, ‘rotting-fish’ scent. This smell attracts pollinators.
Its natural home is the equatorial rainforest of Central Sumatra in Indonesia. It is not a single flower but a cluster of many, tiny flowers, called an inflorescence. The amazing thing is that it can reach heights of 7 to 12 feet and weigh as much as 80 kgs (170 pounds)!
This giant flower blooms only occasionally and lasts a day or two.
