Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat which is on at Chowdiah Memorial Hall in the City has definitely lived up to the CAUSE Foundation’s reputation of producing good musicals. The Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical was a job well done. Do not be put off by the fact that it has no dialogue because the story is fairly easy to follow. Besides, Debra Pais does a great job as the narrator.
Credit must go to the director for choosing a great cast. The show features extremely talented all-rounders who can sing, dance and act equally well. The musical gives a light-hearted view of the biblical story of Joseph.
Joseph’s jealous brothers want to get rid of him and so sell him off as a slave to an Egyptian millionaire. Things just get worse for Joseph who lands up in jail but his ability to interpret dreams gives him a chance to meet the Pharoah. The story then follows Joseph’s rise to fame in the Pharoah’s court in Egypt.
Every member of the cast created an impact on the audience even if they didn’t have much stage time, right from Jude Lazaro who plays Joseph and Prem Koshy as the Elvis Pharoah to Arvind Kasturi and Sharon White who play the millionaire and his wife.
The musical features sounds from all genres — rock and roll to country — and is a must watch for music and theatre lovers.
Sets are definitely worth a mention and while the singers are good, the dancers not only grab audience’s attention but leave a mark with their professional sequences. The only hitch in the play was technical glitches — mikes sometimes worked off-stage instead of on-stage.
Nevertheless, the errors don’t really overshadow the otherwise good musical.
All in all, ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ has all the elements of a plain and simple entertainer. Today is the last show of the play which is on at 7:15 pm. Tickets are available at Supermarket (Brigade Rd), Fab India, Rendezvous (Frazer Town) and at the venue.
