Following the example of American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), the powerful American organisation for seniors, K M George formed the Senior Citizens' Club in Bangalore on November 25, 1990. George, the founder president of the organisation was subsequently elected the Lifetime President.
The club has five distinguished patrons, namely, T N Chaturvedi, the former Governor of Karnataka, Dr P C Alexander, the former Governor of Maharashtra, Padma Vibushan Justice M N Venkatachaliah, former Chief Justice of India Dr Justice V S Malimath and the former Chief of Naval Staff Admiral O S Dawson. This is the first and the only club in Karnataka distributing monthly pension to destitute elders of Bangalore.
Says George, “Most people look at retirement as the time to wind up their lives- a waiting room for death. Instead the club aims at showing its members that retirement could be a new lease of life, an opportunity to learn new skills and to experience the carefree life of ones' youth. Life post-retirement should ideally be about understanding life, living in the moment and overcoming the fear of death. The Club aims to create an awareness among members on these aspects of life after retirement and also about aging gracefully.”
The Senior Citizens' Club's agenda of providing welfare to the elderly, especially those living in the disadvantaged sector includes various programmes. The club organised heavily subsidised heart checkup packages including CT Scans at Narayana Hrudayalaya. It also gave away free supply of food, spectacles and blankets to poor elders. The first Geriatric seminar in Bangalore by an expert team of Doctors from Chennai headed by Dr VS Natarajan was organised by the club.
On World Elders' Day (October 1st) every year, the club holds an 'All Bangalore Elders' Walk' and celebrates Suraksha Bandhan when the young are encouraged to tie rakhis to their parents' arm and pledge to provide love, dignity, care and protection in old age.
Padmabushan Dr M C Modi Service Award is an award instituted by the club and presented to an institution providing maximum service to society, especially the elderly. The club is also actively pursuing a case with the Bangalore Mahanagara Pallike (BMP) to establish a joint venture day care centre for the elders of Bangalore East, complete with recreational facilities and primary medical care.
The club maintains that death is not the end for the soul but only a change of state from one level to a higher one. The club's policy upholds staying active and involved as one of the primary ingredients to feeling young and dealing with retirement and oldage.
