It is not uncommon for people to bury their passions to fit into the paradigm of success — a conventional career. But Rohit S Bulgannawar didn’t think it reason enough to quit doing something he is passionate about.
At the age of 15, when most teenagers are hounded with nightmares of the dreaded board exams, starting a career would be the last thing on their agenda. But Rohit, who was conferred with the title of the youngest DJ in town, had a lot more on his mind than just academics.
Born and brought up in Bangalore, Rohit, who completed his B Com from Kristu Jayanthi College, says he is lucky to have extremely supportive parents. “Deejaying is an unconventional career, not acceptable to most parents. But I am grateful to my parents for allowing me to pursue my passion,” exclaims Rohit.
Deejaying, like other forms of art, provides room for creativity. Though it might seem like it’s only about mixing of sound tracks, Rohit shares that it does involve a lot of research, in-depth knowledge of music and the ability to gauge the mood of the crowd. “It involves a lot of hard work. I usually sit up late at night looking for music that the crowd will enjoy,” he confesses.
Over the years, the clubbing scene in Bangalore has been diverse, changing from funky house to electro to hip-hop. The only hindrance for most people would be the 11:30 pm deadline. DJ Rohit, being the optimist that he is, looks on the brighter side. “Though I’d like the deadline to be pushed to a little over midnight, I don’t mind the current restriction as this gives me more time to work on my research and ideas as well as allows me to play for private parties.”
It must be mentioned that Rohit has been able to carve a niche for himself without any formal training in music. “DJ Gladwyn took me through the nuances and technicalities of deejaying and was extremely encouraging and supportive about it,” he says, adding that DJ Ivan has been his inspiration and he strives to be like him.
Having started off as the resident DJ for Bunkers, he moved on to Sparks and is currently the resident DJ at Casa Del Sol. Within a short span of starting his career, DJ Rohit has many performances to his credit which includes several corporate parties along with playing at the City’s popular clubs. He also chanced upon an opportunity to play at The Aqua Night Club in Wales while shopping for records in London.
Rohit has created a remixed version of ‘Chak De India’ which was well received and appreciated by the audience. Currently, he is working on remixing a song from the Kannada movie ‘Marujanma’ which happens to be his sister’s first film.
The song ‘Nale Nale’ has been sung by the famous director, producer and actor — Prem. This DJ can be seen in action at Casa Del Sol on Residency Road and can be contacted at 99860-26069.
