EMS govt golden jubilee

The golden jubilee of the first elected Communist government  headed by E M S Namboothiripad in Kerala will be celebrated in Bangalore on February 17 in a mass cultural and public programme. The event, to be held at the Arts College ground, will feature a cultural programme by artiste troupes from Karnataka and Kerala, CPI(M) office-bearers told reporters on Saturday.
Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan is also expected to participate in the event, that will kick off at 12.15 pm. U R Ananthamurthy and Prof Baragur Ramachandrappa are among the patrons of the committee that oversees the celebrations.

Kasturba Bhavan

The Karnataka Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi on Saturday opened Kasturba Bhavan in the Gandhi Bhavan premises in Kumara Park East.  Speaker in the dissolved Assembly Krishna, after inaugurating the new bhavan, said that with the new building in place, the Gandhi Bhavan was a one-stop destination for those who want to study Mahatma Gandhi and his ideals.
Krishna, however, lamented the falling sense of scruples among present-day politicians. Union Minister of State for Planning M V Rajashekaran pointed out that the solution to all the social evils of the modern age  including corruption and violence  was a return to the Gandhian way of thought and living. Echoing Rajashekaran’s views, former minister C K Jaffer Sharief called upon members of the trust to ensure that discussions on Gandhian ideals  were taken up at the Gandhi Bhavan.
