Assam govt confers award on Bhupen Hazarika

Eminent singer Bhupen Hazarika was honoured with Pramathesh Barua Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award along with a cabinet minister’s status by the Assam government, reports PTI from Guwahati.
The award instituted by Assam government’s Directorate of Cultural Affairs was given to the maestro by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday evening here in recognition for his all-round contribution.

Atlantis shuttle docks at space station

Space shuttle Atlantis docked with the international space station on Saturday, delivering Europe’s $ 2 billion research lab after years of delay, reports AP from Houston. With commander Stephen Frick at the helm, Atlantis slowly and carefully pulled up to the space station and latched on after performing a giant back flip to give NASA a look at the ship’s thermal shield.

Defamation case against Imrana dismissed

Imrana, whose father-in-law is serving a ten-year jail term for raping her, has won yet another legal battle against her in-laws with a local court dismissing a defamation case filed against her by her sister-in-law, reports PTI from Muzaffarnagar.

Civil Judge Shaista Aqil dismissed the defamation case against Imrana due to non-availability of evidence.
Imrana’s sister-in-law Muhazra Begum had filed the defamation case against her for alleging that all the daughters-in-law of Ali Mohammad (Imrana’s father-in-law) were raped by him.

Indian worker’s short stories hit book stands

It was a dream come true for a 30-year-old Indian worker of a cleaning company doing a 12-hour shift here everyday when the collection of his short stories hit the book stands recently, reports PTI from Dubai.
The book, titled Vidhiyude Nidhikal (Treasures of Fate), was written in Malyalam.
Basheer Peruvalathuparambu, for whom writing is a passion, said that he used to observe people and jotted down his experiences in a personal diary.
“The letters, I sent to newspapers on social issues started getting published. It gave me confidence to write short stories,” he said.
