Double for Mysore

Mysore won the men's and women's hockey gold medals in the State Games here on Saturday.


In what turned out to be a treat for the local crowd, Mysore won the men’s and women’s hockey gold medals in the State Games here on Saturday.

In the men’s final, Mysore defeated Hassan 2-1, while in the women’s final, they defeated the same opponents 9-8 via sudden death.

Hassan took the lead in the second minute through Rohini when she converted a penalty corner. However, Mysore equalised in the 15th minute through Harinakshi.

In the second half, Hassan once again took the lead through Prajwal in the 52nd minute and Mysore restored parity in the 55th minute when Sukhi struck.

The end of regulation time saw both teams being tied at two goals apiece.

For Mysore, Kavyashree, Muthamma, Sukhi scored but Saraswathi and Harinakshi missed. For Hassan, Prajwal, Yogeshwari and Nisha scored but Rohini and Smitha missed out. With the scored tied 5-5 after the tie breaker, the match went into sudden death. With the scores going level till 8-8, Mysore’s Kavyashree converted but Hassan’s Prajwal was unable to convert, giving Mysore the win.

Bellary won the bronze medal with a 4-1 win over Bangalore North in the third place play-off. For Bellary, Christina Paul (23rd, 27th), Vijayalakshmi (26th) and Keerthi B (40th) scored, while Lakshmi N (34th) struck for Bangalore North.

In the men’s final, Mysore took the lead when Appanna scored in the 11th minute. Vachan Bopaiah increased the lead when he latched on to a pass from Srinivas Reddy in the 16th minute.

In the second half, Hassan were able to reduce the deficit by one goal through Taranath in the 44th minute.
Hassan tried their best to score but they could not get through Mysore’s defences. Mysore goalkeeper Somaiah put up a good show and saved several potential goals. Hubli-Dharwad won the bronze medal after defeating Gadag 2-1 in the third place play-off.
