CRIME BEAT
Bid to rape researcher
DH News Service, Bangalore:

This attempt to rape case is being blamed on ‘outsourcing’. At least that’s what the guardians of law appear to be using as a ruse to shrug off their responsibilities.

More than three days after the rape attempt, there’s no sign that the accused will be booked for the offence. He is technically still at large, though confined to bed, courtesy the injury he suffered after attempting the crime.
The jurisdictional police, in fact, have registered an FIR for robbery.

Yelahanka police inspector Prabhu Shankar claimed that the accused is unconscious. But he said he didn’t know in which hospital the accused has been admitted. He could not give the name of the accused either.
“The guard was working for some outsourced security agency. Some agency in Indiranagar. So, it is their duty,” the police officer said.

On Wednesday night, a security guard — named Deva, according to sources — barged into the room of a research scholar on the campus of the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCSAR), Jakkur post, and made a futile attempt to rape her.

The lady’s room was on the second floor, and a sports and cultural fest was going on on the ground floor. At about 9 pm, the research scholar from Bhopal was busy studying in her room when she heard a knock on the door.

As she opened the door, the guard, in his early thirties, rushed inside the room and pushed her into a corner. The girl managed to recover and raised an alarm. Dozens of students, who heard the screams, rushed to her rescue. They broke open the door and freed the girl.

The guard, however, managed to rush out of the room. He sprinted up the stairs and in an attempt to escape, jumped from the roof top. He fell flat on the ground and injured his back, hands and legs.
The students took the guard to hospital and alerted the police. The Yelahanka police under whose jurisdiction the campus falls, arrived much later.

Robbery case

Prabhu Shankar, told Deccan Herald: “I remember the case vaguely. I don't know the name of the security guard. I was told he is still unconscious. Any way, we have taken up a robbery case and filed an FIR.”
The inspector sought to downplay the entire incident. “The girls may have told something nasty to the guard and irritated him. He might have retaliated. It was an outsourced security agency. So, it is their duty,” was the police officer’s rationale on why things were progressing at snail’s pace.
