MEG, SW Railway strike gold
From Sajith B Warrier, DH News Service, Mysore:
Madras Engineer Group and Centre men and South Western Railway women clinched the basketball titles in the State Games at the Chamundi Vihar stadium here on Sunday.

While MEG overcame a minor scare before prevailing over Army Service Corps 72-52 in the men's final, SWR defeated Indiranagar Basketball Club, Bangalore 56-26 in a lop-sided women's final.

Peter John scored a match-high 18 points for MEG, the league champions who upset fancied Vijaya Bank en route to the finals.

The Sappers, who led 35-25 at the half-way mark, were really stretched in the third quarter in which they could score only 14 points against their opponents’ 18. It looked as though complacency had crept into their ranks as the usually reliable Subbaiah and Ravinder made some silly errors and some loose passing didn't help their cause either.

However, the Sappers who still enjoyed a 49-43 lead at the end of the third quarter, came all guns blazing in the last quarter where Tinu Joseph and Peter combined well to score 23 points between them.

For the losers, the seasoned Nixon stood tall amidst the ruins, basketing 16 points. While their player-cum-coach Prasad excelled when it came to defence.

In the women's final, SWR Mysore's Smitha delivered a standout performance, collecting 25 points. Aliya Khan saved the blushes for IBBC, especially in the second quarter by scoring a few stunning long-rangers, but the damage had already been done. SWR's Reshma was good in marking, and with IBBC's Sonam being the obvious target, there was no way by which IBBC could break through.

Meanwhile, Belgaum's Siddappa Kotre bagged two gold in the cycling events which also concluded on Sunday.
