It is impossible to predict the time and progress of revolution. It is governed by its own more or less mysterious laws.

Dasarahalli set to make a clean start
By Satish Shile, DH News Service, Bangalore:
Collection of garbage starts at 6.30 am. Pourakarmikas have to clean roads, sidewalks, drains, parks regularly.

After years of neglect, residents of BBMP Dasarahalli Zone could now look forward for some real solid waste management. In the next few days they will have Pourakarmikas visiting door-to-door with push carts and ringing bells to collect garbage. Completely covered garbage carriers will replace the open trucks, which often left behind a bad odour and littered the roads.

According to Medical officer of Health, Dr Vijaykumar Biradar, the project’s launch date will be decided in consultation with the Palike administrator. However preparations for effective implementation are in full swing. Along with the contractors, Stree Shakti groups have been granted a package to take the up the collection work.
The BBMP zone comprises of 32 wards of the erstwhile Dasarahalli CMC and 11 villages, which were merged to form the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palike. The total population is around 4.40 lakh and number of households is over 1.06 lakh. The new system to handle solid waste covers households, industries and commercial establishments. As much as 170 tons of solid waste is generated every day in the zone.

The Palike will be incurring an expense of Rs 5.65 crore annually to manage solid wastes. The work has been divided into four packages and contractors have been selected by inviting tenders.

Collection of garbage starts at 6.30 am. Pourakarmikas have to clean roads, sidewalks, drains, parks regularly.
“The Palike has divided roads into three categories - A, B and C. Roads falling in A category will be swept everyday. Those in B category will be swept once in three days, while streets of C category will be taken care of once in a week”, he stated.

Landfill

The zone has also acquired 25 acres of land at Doddabidarakallu for a landfill. Amidst protests from the villagers around the site the Palike managed to secure it.

Dr Biradar said the Palike is planning a separate road connecting the landfill from NH 4 to provide easy movement for trucks carrying garbage. “Otherwise trucks have to reach the landfill through many villages. Moreover roads in the villages are too narrow. Movement of vehicles on these roads will be a difficult task,” he added.
