As much as 5,000 litres of petrol went down the drain after a tanker collided against a compound at Boikere near Madikeri on Wednesday.
The mishap occurred in a sharp curve in Boikere. The tanker driver lost control over the vehicle as a heavy laden lorry had developed a snag in the middle of the road near the curve. The tanker was carrying 20,000 litres of petrol from Mangalore to Chennai. As soon as the villagers learnt of the mishap, they rushed to collect the leaking petrol from the tanker.
As a precautionary measure, fire personnel were rushed to the spot and they sprinkled water on the road. The movement of vehicles were disrupted for several hours on Kushalnagar-Madikeri road.
