Gritty Fish outplays Crugnola
Miami, Reuters:
Top seed James Blake's first-round match against fellow American Robert Kendrick at the Delray Beach International was cut short by rain on Tuesday.

Blake was 3-2 up in the first set when rain stopped play after just 17 minutes and the clash will be continued on Wednesday.

Heavy wind and persistent rain played havoc with Tuesday’s programme.

Mardy Fish, the number eight seed and finalist here five years ago, needed to wait out a six-hour delay before completing a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Marco Crugnola of Italy, who was making his debut appearance in an ATP tournament.

Other results:

Max Mirnyi (Blr) bt Luka Gregorc (Slo) 7-6 (7-5), 6-2; Michael Russell (US) bt Alex Bogomolov Jr (US) 6-1, 6-0; Igor Kunitsyn (Rus) bt Benjamin Becker (Ger) 6-3, 7-6; Gilles Muller bt Jessie Levine 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).

Murray through

Andy Murray of Britain in straight sets to reach the second round of the Open 13, adds AP from Marseille. Fourth-seeded Murray beat Dutch qualifier Jesse Huta Galung 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday.

Szavay beaten

Agnes Szavay’s celebrations of her first top-20 ranking were cut short when she lost to Russian qualifier Alisa Kleybanova 6-2, 6-3 in the Diamond Games first round, adds AP from Antwerp.

Szavay, the sixth seed from Hungary who earned her career-high ranking of 18th last Sunday, became the first top-20 victim for the 120th-ranked Kleybanova.

Other results: Julie Ditty (US) bt Alona Bondarenko (Ukr) 4-6, 6-3, 6-4; Karin Knapp (Ita) bt Yaroslava Shvedova (Rus) 3-6, 6-4, 6-2; Sofia Arvidsson (Swe) bt Meilen Tu (US) 6-1, 6-2; Tsvetana Pironkova (Bul) bt Anne Kremer (Lux) 6-1, 6-1; Ai Sugiyama (Jpn) bt Caroline Maes (Bel) 7-5, 6-3.

Kuerten ousted

Former world number one Gustavo Kuerten opened his farewell tour with a first round defeat in front of his home fans on Tuesday, the 31-year-old falling 7-5, 6-1 to Argentina’s Carlos Berlocq at the Brazil Open, adds Reuters fromn Rio de Janeiro.
